MEMORIAL DAY

MEMORIAL DAY

Memorial Day is an American holiday observed on the last Monday of May which honors men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military.
Memorial Day originated in the years following the Civil War and it started as an event to honor Union soldiers who had died during the American Civil War. It was inspired by the way people in the Southern states honored their dead. After World War I, it was extended to include all men and women who died in any war or military action, and became an official holiday in 1971.
Many Americans observe Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries or memorials, holding family gatherings and participating in parades.
